Sinfonia Varsovia has been an ambassador of Polish musical culture on international and domestic stages for 40 years. Evolving out of the Polish Chamber Orchestra, founded in 1972, the group's ambitions expanded in 1984 with the arrival of the legendary violinist Yehudi Menuhin as its first guest conductor, marking the beginning of its global presence.
The orchestra has performed in prestigious venues worldwide, collaborating with renowned conductors, including Claudio Abbado, Witold Lutosławski, Lorin Maazel and Emmanuel Krivine, and soloists such as Mstislav Rostropovich, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Alfred Brendel and Martha Argerich.
Sinfonia Varsovia has played more 4,000 concerts around the world and made over 300 records of works from the 18th century to the present day, with a special focus on works of Polish composers such as Chopin, Penderecki, Paderewski, Lutosławski, Górecki and Kilar. The ensemble has also premiered many works including by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, Paweł Mykietyn and Krzysztof Penderecki, who served as Musical Director and then Artistic Director between 1997 and 2020.
