Two new albums from François-Xavier Roth attract acclaim
An Editor's Choice in the December Gramophone magazine and a 5* review in The Guardian , Mirages, features Sabine Devieilhe and Les Siècles, a collection of French opera and song exploring the exotic allure of faraway – and imagined – places and people. In addition to three numbers from Delibes’ opera, it features music by Berlioz, Debussy and Stravinsky and some rarer names: Thomas, Messager, Koechlin and Delage.
Released 8 December, Roth's first recording with the Gürzenich Orchestra, is of Mahler's Symphony no.5, a work premiered by the orchestra under the composer in 1904. This new recording features in The Gramophone's Listening Room blog and forms part of the magazine's playlist on Spotify, Apple Music and Qobuz.
