Eivind Aadland conducts three world premieres
Eivind Aadland will conduct three world premieres of pieces by Sydney-based composer Holly Harrison over the coming seasons with Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, where he is Chief Conductor and Artistic Director. Harrison wrote the works as Composer in Residence on TSO’s Australian Composers’ School from 2020–2021.
Aadland will conduct the new orchestral work Hi-Vis alongside Bruch and Dvořák at a concert in Hobart on 11 March, and record it with the orchestra during his stay, as well as Harrison’s Viola Concertino and works for brass and string.
He said of the collaboration, ‘As with most composers I have worked with, Holly is open to input from the performer. I always enjoy working with composers who trust performers to give a wholehearted and personal interpretation of their work. Her music is lively and captivating, and I look forward to performing and recording her works written for the TSO. I hope our performances can match her positive and joyful energy.’
He described Hi-Vis: ‘Holly borrows rhythmic elements from popular music, yet her musical language has a strong personal identity. Busy and intricate parts for low brass create the rhythmic energy and jazzy string glissandos and bravura woodwind solos all come together in a relaxed but precise orchestral sound world. Do we hear a little Frank Zappa here?’
